After SRPs are completed, the depth of periodontal or gum pockets will be re-measured at a separate appointment called a re-evaluation. At the re-evaluation, the dental hygienist will evaluate whether there is a reduction in gingival inflammation, if home care has improved, and what treatment is necessary after the initial SRPs.
If the gums have improved, the patient will move on to periodontal maintenances - cleanings that are performed at 3 month intervals. If the gums have not improved, the doctor may recommend a procedure called “osseous surgery,” which is performed by a periodontist.
