What are Dental Cavities?

Dental cavities are caused by the breakdown of tooth enamel due to acids that are formed by bacteria.

What causes cavities?

Cavities can be caused by multiple things. An example is eating too much sugar, too much carbohydrates, not brushing or flossing regularly, not seeing your dentist at least twice per year.

How does a dentist check for cavities?

A dentist can check for cavities with x-rays, and also a direct exam where we can actually see and get a feel for the teeth.

What are the stages of a cavity?

The stages of a cavity can be maily divided into three. One is the breakdown of the enamel. The second one is the breaking down of the dentin which is below the enamel, and the third is pretty much one where the pulp of the tooth or the nerve.

Can a cavity spread to other teeth?

A cavity can definitely spread to other teeth.

Is it possible for cavities to go away?

Cavities don’t really go away. A cavity can be stopped from progressing usually by doing a filling. However, if it’s larger, it might need additional treatment like a dental crown or even a root canal.

How long do cavity fillings last?

Cavity fillings usually last between 5 and 10 years if well-taken care of.

Can dental cleanings prevent cavities?

Dental cleanings can absolutely prevent dental cavities because they are part of a prevention process.

What should I do if I suspect I have a cavity?

If you suspect you have a cavity, you should give your dentist a call right away.
